SIL vs ILO – What’s the Difference?
Both Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Individualised Living Options (ILO) help people with disabilities live more independently, but they work in different ways. Understanding the difference can help you decide which one best fits your lifestyle and goals.
At Solid Holistic Care, we provide SIL across Newcastle and assist participants in exploring what living options suit their needs.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Supported Independent Living is an NDIS-funded service that helps participants live more independently while receiving daily support.
SIL focuses on:
- Daily routines and life skills
- Shared homes and community living
- Continuous or 24-hour support
- Support worker presence for daily assistance
It is ideal for individuals who benefit from structured, hands-on help to build independence while enjoying social connection with others.

Individualised Living Options (ILO)
ILO offers more flexibility for participants who want to design their own living arrangement. Instead of moving into a shared home, participants choose where and how they want to live, such as living alone, with family or with a housemate.
ILO focuses on:
- Choice and control over living arrangements
- Personalised support options
- Flexible assistance based on needs
- Living in the community with support nearby
It is well suited to people who are confident with some independence but still value having support when needed.
Choosing the Right Option
The right living option depends on your level of independence, daily support needs and lifestyle goals.
- Choose SIL if you need regular, structured support from disability support workers.
- Choose ILO if you prefer flexibility and want to live in your own way with minimal daily assistance.
Some participants begin in SIL and later transition to ILO as their independence grows, while others may start with ILO and later move into SIL if their support needs increase.
